Multicultural Awareness Council

Mission

The Multicultural Awareness Council (MAC) is committed to spreading awareness about multiculturalism in Ukraine.

Multiculturalism

Goals

MAC aims to teach Ukrainians, particularly youth, more about the many cultural groups within Ukraine and around the world. We also spread awareness about racism and xenophobia and promotes tolerance and acceptance of people of different cultures and ethnicities. These goals are met through a wide range of activities, including camps, events, seminars, and lessons.

Membership & Meetings

Meetings are held 3-4 times a year. There is no formal application process. Volunteers become members by coming to meetings and getting involved in various projects.

Description of Subcommittees

Roma Outreach Awareness and Development (ROAD)

Roma Outreach Awareness and Development is committed to expanding access to education and civil society among one of Europe's most historically disadvantaged and persecuted communities.

The Jewish Heritage Group

he Jewish Heritage Group organizes events to celebrate Jewish holidays. All volunteers are welcome to attend, along with Ukrainian friends or counterparts. JHG also aims to educate about Jewish history in Ukraine and connect with Jewish communities.

Camp Unity

Camp Unity is a week-long summer camp with two locations in Ukraine. Since its inception in 2009, it has been held in wooded campsites, where children from throughout Ukraine live in tents. Volunteers and Ukrainian partners lead lessons and activities on multiculturalism and tolerance.

The Lesson Planning Committee

The Lesson Planning Committee sends lesson plans on MAC's focus areas to volunteers through the Friday Digest.

Living Libraries

The Living Libraries subcommittee encourages volunteers to host "living libraries" at their sites. These events bring volunteers and people of various backgrounds to speak with Ukrainian children or students in an informal setting with a goal of cross-cultural understanding.

Additional Projects and Resources

MAC has a scrapbook called the "MAC Book" for members of communities around Ukraine to express their identities. This is done by passing it to interested PCV's that would like to add their site's personality to the MAC Book.

MAC is looking for help developing an international penpal program and a Ukrainian youth newsletter. MAC is working on compiling lesson plans and resources about diversity, tolerance, and multicultural awareness. Please use our email address below to request lesson plans from us.
